The
treatment processes removed 1,311,448 pounds of suspended solids, 1,165,732 pounds of organics, and 112,201 pounds
of ammonia. 2,978,427 gallons of leachate from the Short Mountain Landfill were processed. 7,668,100 gallons from
the facultative sludge lagoon (FSL) were sent back to the WPCF to be re-processed.
The activated sludge treatment process experienced an upset that lasted for a little over two weeks early in the month.
All available clarifiers were placed in service along with extra contact chambers to maximize the suspended solids
capture. The upset to the biological system resulted in a de-flocculation of the biological growth. The process design
function of activated sludge is based on the ability of the biological growth to flocculate or come together and settle to
the bottom of the secondary clarifiers. This is a fragile process that is easily upset by inattentive culturing of organisms
or chemical upsets brought on by compounds in the influent. The microbial analysis indicated not abnormal fluctuation
of bacterial organisms. To date, we have not been able to identify an influent source agent.
4
