Framework for Diversity Summary <br /> ' Executive M ers acknowl <br /> anag edge that our diversity efforts impact three very important areas in the <br /> organization: recruiiment/selection, work environment, and service delivery, which are crucial to success in <br /> ~ promoting diversity. The implementation priorities and strategies for moving forward have been outlined in <br /> this summary.. Each diversity initiative included in the plan works collectively with the others to bring <br /> uniformity to the plan while at the same time encouraging departments to customize the plan to fit their <br /> needs. The recommendations have been prioritized in summary form to help provide action steps, and a <br /> starting place to begin implementation. <br /> 1. Department Diversity Committees ~ <br /> ? Composed of line employees and managers <br /> ? Diversity Coordinator will act as liaison, advisor, and resource to committees <br /> ? Committees will be formed within the next 90 days <br /> ~ ? Start up money will be funded by departments <br /> i <br /> r 2. Diversity Advisory Council <br /> <br /> ' Composed of Chairs of Diversity Committees, Human Rights and Human Resource: Staff <br /> ? Executive and Division Manager appointed to council <br /> ? Will officially begin meeting in June 1998 <br /> 3. Diversity Training <br /> ? City wide for every work unit <br /> ? Expanded and enhanced training offered through the Coordinated Training Program <br /> 4. Environmental Assessment <br /> ? Evaluations of current work environments <br /> ? Diversity Advisory Council to oversee this work <br /> 5. Performance Appraisal <br /> ? .Incorporation of a Diversity and Respectful Environment section in current evaluations <br /> ? Diversity Committees under the guidance of department management teams will propose best <br /> approaches to adding this component to evaluations <br /> 6. Enhanced Recruitment Strategies <br /> ? Department Diversity Committees will be forwarded workforce statistics to evaluate and begin <br /> developing recruitment strategies to improve diversity <br /> ? Diversrty Coordinator will continue to assist in the recruitment of diverse applicants <br /> 7. Diversity Communication <br /> ? .Internal <br /> ? Diversity News Column added to City Beat Newsletter, coordinated by Diversity Coordinator <br /> ? internal routing of relevant diversity policy info and diversity publications <br /> ? External <br /> ? Diversity Advisory Council to develop communication plan with input from Diversity committees <br /> 8. Community Outreach <br /> ? Staging of information tables at community cultural events <br /> ? Contributions to community cultural events <br /> ? Attendance and participation at community meetings <br /> ? Develop ongoing relationships between key staff and organizations of color in the community <br /> 9. Community Involvement <br /> ? Explore department advisory committee concept to review/assist in the development of plans <br /> ? Involve community members and key organizations in diversity awareness and training activities <br /> ? Continue and expand the use of community members to assist in outreach recruitment efforts and <br /> to participate in hiring processes <br /> <br />
