Labor Day, first Monday in September
Veteran's Day, November 11
Thanksgiving Day, fourth Thursday in November
Friday following Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day, December 25
One day between December 18 and January 8 (to be mutually agreed upon by the supervisor and
the employee)
Holidays are observed on the preceding Friday, if they fall on Saturday, and on the following
Monday, if they fall on Sunday. This applies to City operations that are scheduled Monday through
Friday only.
Holiday Pay
To receive holiday pay, you must work the last scheduled work day before and the first scheduled
work day after the holiday or be on authorized leave with pay for both of these days. Holiday pay
for full-time, regular employees is eight (8) hours. Holiday pay for part-time employees shall be
prorated to their regular work schedule. Holidays which occur during vacation or sick leave are not
charged against the leave.
Non-represented/Confidential employees who are required to work on a holiday will be
compensated for all hours worked on the holiday at 1-1/2 times their straight-time rate in addition to
holiday pay. This premium pay shall be due for working on either the actual holiday or the observed
holiday, but not both. All other non-represented employees (except those in the Police and
Fire/EMS) required to work on the operation's designated holiday should take an alternate day off
within sixty (60) days following the holiday. Part-time employees receive a prorated "alternate"
holiday to betaken within sixty (60) days following the holiday or prorated holiday pay at the end of
the sixty (60) day period
Shift Holiday for Non-represented Police and Fire/EMS Employees
Non-represented Police and Fire/EMS employees working in a 24-hour, 7-day perweek operation
who are designated shift employees will earn shift holiday since they may be required to work on a
City-sanctioned holiday. These employees accrue 9.33 hours (13.06 hours for 56-hour
Fire/Emergency Medical Services employees) of holiday time per month.
Vacations
Eligibility
AFSCME and Non-represented employees are eligible for vacation time after they have been
employed for 6 consecutive months. EPEA- and IAFF-represented employees are eligible after
twelve consecutive months of employment. Vacation is accrued based on regular hours worked
and paid leave time. Overtime hours are excluded. Supervisory, professional and managerial
employees are also eligible for management vacation days.
Taking Vacation
Vacations must be scheduled in advance and are subject to supervisory approval. You cannot take
vacation not yet accrued.
Accrual
Vacation accrual varies by bargaining unit.
