Benefits and Leaves of Absence
Employee benefits are a significant part of your total compensation. This section provides general
information about those benefits. Since benefits are covered in bargaining agreements, bargaining
unit employees should refer to their respective collective bargaining contracts for specific
information.
Sick Leave
Philosophy
Our sick leave policy is a form of insurance provided to reduce the financial burden of non-
occupational illness and injury and to ensure the well-being of the employee. Regular and
consistent attendance helps us to work effectively as a team; enables us to produce a quality
product; and is necessary to provide our customers, the public, with efficient, cost-effective service.
Sick leave may be used for personal illness or for personal doctor visits. You must get prior
approval from your supervisor for doctor appointments during working hours. Whenever possible,
appointments should be scheduled outside your work hours.
Use of sick leave is not allowed for time off resulting from an injury or illness that is compensable
under Workers' Compensation.
Eligibility
You begin accumulating sick leave hours when you are hired.
Accrual
Regular, full-time employees on a 40-hour work week accrue 96 hours of sick leave each year.
Regular part-time employees accrue sick leave on a prorated basis. Fire personnel working 56
hours per week should refer to their labor contract for sick leave accrual information. You will
not be compensated for unused sick leave upon termination.
How Your Sick Leave Works
If you are unable to work due to illness, you must contact your supervisor at or before the beginning
of each work shift. If you are on an extended absence that has been authorized by your supervisor,
you do not need to call in daily. Verification of illness by a doctor may be required by your
supervisor prior to authorizing sick leave.
Bonus
Full-time non-represented employees who use 3 days or less of their sick leave hours during a
fiscal year are eligible to receive 8-hours of vacation (pro-rated for part time employees based on
the hours worked during the prior year). You must be on the City's payroll on July 1 to receive the
extra vacation hours and have been employed for the full fiscal year prior to that date.
Illness in the Family
Sick leave may be used for the illness of immediate family members where the employee's
presence is required to care for the family member. See section on Family Medical Leave for
additional provisions.
Family Medical and Parental Leave
Page 19-February 2004
