7) Do you resolve field engineering problems? If yes, please provide a brief
I example of your role.
In the construction of new wastewater or storm sewers, conflicts with existing
structures are common. It is necessary to determine the desired goal, within the
~ limits of the specifications, of the intended design, and determine the best means
to accomplish that goal. It may require changing the designed slope from one
manhole to another to accomplish that goal. Consideration of the effect of the
change on the associated system must be considered and a speedy solution is
essential because this problem occurs when the contractor has a crew standing
by to perform the work. If the intended change is substantial and may result in a
considerable effect fo the associated system, the Engineering Technician must
propose a solution and contact the project manager for approval.

~ Estimated time spent: Often during the construction of a project
8) Do you negotiate solutions to issues or problems? Please describe the
process and your responsibilities. Are you responsible for any other
enforcement activities? Please describe these activities and your role.
As an example, the prime contractor may not co-ordinate construction efforts
with their sub-contractors or properly plan (heir own work efforts. The effect of the
lack of co-ordination may result in extended franc delays, blocked access to
private property, potential public safety hazards or delays in the completion of the
project.
It is my responsibility to offer solutions from an objective viewpoint with
consideration of the effect on the public and a reminder of the contractor's
responsibilities to prevent these from occurring.
Additionally, the Engineering Technician must occasionally mediate issues
between the contractor and the public when problems arise. The Engineering
Technician may have to direct the contractor to perform contracted work at a
particular time to reduce the negative effect to the public. This may mean being
more involved with the contractors scheduling of work and materials delivery to
accomplish the goal
Estimated time spent: Often during the construction of a project
9) Do you perform any survey work? Please describe a typical process.
1 have used my knowledge of the principles, and experience in the
techniques and use of Total Station Theodolites, data collectors, automatic,
electronic and laser levels in data collection for topographic and planimetric
surveys and construction staking:
Additionally, to pen`orm the role land surveying it is necessary to have experience
in and working knowledge of geometry and trigonometry, Oregon State land
division standards, 1927 and 1983 USGS elevation datum, site grading, reading
and interpreting construction plans and topographic maps, the use of tax maps,
the knowledge of creating and using of cutsheets, stakeout sheets and points
lists
It is necessary to know how to maintain accurate and legible field notes,
Engineering Technician Position Review 9 January 2004
_ _
