j Suggestion: Crew leads, lead workers, and supervisors could meet a few <br /> minutes each day (or week) to decide how supervisors should be involved in <br /> <br /> j particular projects. <br /> Request- Committee members take the appreciation question to others they work with <br /> for a reality check. <br /> Feedback from the Yard (delivered at 8/20/03 meeting) -Several Committee members <br /> asked others they work with for feedback on: Why don't employees feel appreciated? <br /> These were their answers: <br /> The focus seems to be on what yet needs to be done and putting out fires and <br /> complaints, rather <br /> th~.wl~at,:0e~,,~~a„rf~ <br /> ¦ Managers don't. have knowledge of skill level needed for improvement -it's <br /> frustrating. <br /> ¦ The City made one employee get a Commercial Drivers Permit so they could drug <br /> test. <br /> ¦ Doubt about the City's ability to change. <br /> ¦ Some people are not listened to when they :express ideas -when others are listened <br /> to for the same ideas. <br /> ¦ Not respected for the day-today grind. <br /> ¦ Nobody cares about one employee going deaf. <br /> When asked: Do you feel appreciated? the following responses were given: <br /> ¦ Yes, since the restructure, things are going in the right direction. <br /> ¦ Maybe management doesn't know skill levels of employees. <br /> ¦ Very appreciated compared to Downtown. <br /> ¦ Overall, I do feel appreciated, <br /> Step 2 - Do: Test Theories <br /> THEORY TO TEST <br /> Goal: F,~d <br /> facts;~to <br /> comet t~ roo.g~,~,~~~; (communication about day <br /> to-day work) by supervisors (someone who understands the work and skills. required, <br /> someone who has a relationship with the employee). <br /> Is it because: <br /> 1) Supervisors are too busy (take on work, get assigned to committees, in lots of <br /> trainings)? <br /> 2) The work is too routine (where they feel like they don't need to be involved)? <br /> 3) The supervisor is new (takes time to build relationships)? <br /> 4) There is distance between supervisor and crew (variety of locations, hard to find <br /> people, 10-20 people on crew)? <br /> 5) Supervisor is unaware that involvement is an expectation? <br /> 4 <br /> <br />
