Intrinsic in a number of these values is the City's commitment to follow all employment
laws in our treatment of employees and those we contact in the course of our work. This commitment is
based on more than an effort to achieve legal compliance. We must comply with the provisions of the
law because it is the right thing to do and is in the best interest of both our employees and the citizens of
Eugene. The City of Eugene is committed to creating a work environment that is welcoming and
productive for all employees. I believe that not only following these laws but embracing them is an
inherent part of doing so.
This organization has adopted a number of policies that articulate our commitment and define our
expectations of all employees. These policies were recently revised to expand the City's Americans with
Disabilities (ADA) policy and to develop specific procedures, including time lines, for requesting
accommodation. In addition to the ADA changes, the respectful work environment language was
separated from the discrimination and harassment section after feedback from managers and employee
union representatives indicated that it was confusing to have them in the same place.
The following link \\cesrv106\public\appm policy 3-110.pdf will take you to the section of the
Administrative Policies and Procedures Manual (APPM) containing the City's non-discrimination
policies. I ask that you carefully read these policies so you understand your rights and the
responsibilities for which we are all accountable as City employees. I also encourage you to get involved
and bepro-active in our efforts to improve our work environment by bringing forward any issues,
concerns, or suggestions you might have.
6/28/2004
