I appreciate your efforts to provide some ideas for a
solution to our game day parking needs. I want to provide you the following information/feedback in hopes that we can
find a solution that works well for the city and university.
The idea of parking on the park's vegetation/turf would work if one was allowed to park for the entire football season. We
would find it almost impossible to have parking for only some of the home games. Our last two games for 2008 are on
November 8th and 15th. I wonder about the recovery of the vegetation if mitigation occurred later in November or early
Spring?
Using for discussion our observations regarding the grass parking we have near the shelters in ABP then the issue would be rutting
and getting cars stuck as well as vegetation damage once the wet weather really hit which is usually around Oct 1st. Our on-grass
parking program is really set up to allow parking only when it wou{d avoid this type of damage. If such parking could be made
available later in the year would really depend on how firm the ground was in the particular area and how much damage was actually
happening.
Thinking about similar parking in restored areas of {ots that are a part of the Wiflamut Naturai Area of East Aiton Baker Park (lots 8
and 9 for instance) I would think the public tolerance for damage within the natural area would be less than is the case within the
grass parking area of West ABP near the sheiters. On the other hand, the ground is pretty hard in the area where we recently
worked and we only intend to place a couple inches of seed mulch to get the vegetation started. I don't know how hard that ground
will remain once significant water is added. However, I would think we could accommodate some parking as late as the ground
would take it without sustaining much damage.
Lot 8 and 9 have previously been assigned/parked by mernbers of the press,TV, working AD staff and visiting team
support personnel plus some of the stadium support personnel (concessions,ushers,etc.). Due to the assignments and
deadlines of the working media,TV, working AD staff and visitars parking in Alton Baker Park (on grass or in the paved
lots) would be troublesome due to the distance and possible late nights. (Ow• first 20Q8 Home Ciaine against the IJ of' W A
is a 7PM kickoff - anticipate an 11:30 PM end). We do encourage the stadium support staff to take the LTD shuttles but if
there was parking for the community and church groups to car-pool or drive vans to ABP that may be helpful.
What is the possibility of parking in lot 8 on both the new smaller 30 vehicle area and on the area outside of the re-
configurated telephone poles? Will this area becomes like much of ABP's other grass lands? And could it withstand
parking 6 times a year? It would be tremendous if there was still the ability to park 350 vehicles in the lot 8 area for this
Fall. I would hope that planting the area in early Spring 09 would still allow the plant material to mature before the next
7/18/2008 ..
:_. , ~ N _.. . -
~. ~__ _. w _ _. . 4~..~~ ~-. ~: V
