NORTHWEST <br /> YOYTiI CORPS <br /> E <br /> WS ~ELEAS <br /> NE <br /> <br /> January 10, 20b0 <br /> CONTACT: Marcia Peeters, VIP Program Coordinator, 682-4845 <br /> Nina Whitney, Northwest Youth Corps/AmeriCorps, 349-5055 <br /> From Public Information Section, 682-5523 <br /> FOR IMME IATE RELEASE <br /> PARK ~ ROJECTS CELEBRATE CIVIC SPIRIT ON MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY <br /> Memb rs of the Northwest Youth Corps/AmeriCorps will team up with other community <br /> volunteers and the Eugene Public Works Department on Martin Luther King Day to show their <br /> community sp rit by cleaning up neighborhood parks and making them safer. <br /> Holid ~y work parties are slated at four area parks. The work parties will be held on Monday, <br /> January 17, fr m 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Sladden Park), with a lunch break at <br /> noon. At the ompletion of each project, the AmeriCorps members will hold a brief "thank-you" party <br /> including a sh rt presentation on the meaning of Martin Luther King Day. The public is invited to <br /> participate in ny of the park projects. <br /> In a p rtnership initiated by City Councilor Scott Meisner, volunteers with AmeriCorps and the <br /> City's Neighb rWoods program will plant trees in Sladden Park at the north end of Adams Street in the <br /> Whiteaker nei hborhood. The seven trees to be planted include native dogwood, cedar, and hemlock. <br /> Anot er Martin Luther King Day volunteer project will be focused on cleaning up State Street <br /> Park, located ff Dakota Street north of Barger Avenue. AmeriCorps members will be joined by <br /> employees fr Industrial Adhesives, park neighbors, park maintenance staff, and staff from the City's <br /> Volunteers in jParks program to plant trees, beautify shrub beds, remove graffiti, and cut blackberries <br /> and other invajsive plant species.
