News Release,-Trainsong Park <br /> Page 2 <br /> i July 6, 2000 <br /> "Nike has a long history with Eugene and we feel it is important for us to give back to this <br /> community that has been such a big part of our lives," said Lisa Claussen, general manager of Nike <br /> USA Retail. "Nike employees are participating in the Trainsong Service Day because we recognize <br /> how important' it is for every child to have access to safe places to play. " Nike is the world's leading <br /> designer and rriarketer of authentic athletic footwear, apparel, equipment and accessories for a wide <br /> variety of sports and fitness activities. <br /> YouthT~'orks is a new NYC program which offers youth a paid stipend and potential for high <br /> school credit. ~'he program includes YouthServe service work projects, management of the YouthGrow <br /> garden, and th YouthBuilt product line. <br /> "This rainsong Service Day provides a wonderful example of business volunteers and youth <br /> joining together to provide increased opportunities for children to play," said Windy Arey Kent, NYC's <br /> <br /> I <br /> YouthWorks program director. Together with volunteers from Nike, YouthWorks participants are <br /> preparing Trainsong Park for a summer's worth of activities and beyond. Efforts from companies such as <br /> Nike increase I~fYC's capacity to serve youth." <br /> NYC's Trainsong Service Day is also made possible through Americorps members supported by <br /> the Oregon Community Service Commission (OCSC). The OCSC support also allows YouthWorks <br /> participants 17 years and older to apply to earn a $787 Americorps voucher for college or trade school. <br /> Eugene's Volunteers in Parks (VIP) program developed in 1998 as a way to continue and expand <br /> partnerships wi~hin the community to adopt and care for parks and promote stewardship of the public <br /> park system is also helping coordinate the Trainsong Park Service Day. <br /> Businegs and community support has helped NYC serve over 4,000 youth since 1984.
