This Arbor Day project provides an opportunity for young
people in NY 's YouthWorks program, schools, volunteers and Americorps members to work
together to im rove the community. YouthWorks introduces students to computers and
technology, o ganic gardening, entrepreneurship, carpentry, and volunteerism through hands-
on education, field trips, community service and recreation.
The p oject is important for the park because, if horse chestnuts are not removed, they
will exclude a d eventually eliminate native species. Horse chestnut is an aggressive
competitor in haded forest areas and eliminates many herbaceous species from the forest
floor and pro ibits native species of trees, shrubs and forbs from germinating. When the horse
chestnuts are removed, existing big-leaf maples will quickly fill in as a successive species. With
the addition o native snowberry, osoberry and yew, the Arbor Day project will provide an
important ste forward in restoring native habitat in Eugene.
Form re information on the YouthWorks program, call 349-5055.
