t_

r- '
~ ~ ~
- ~ -
April 20, 2001
CONTACT: John Moriarty, Management Plan Coordinator, 682-5234
From Public I formation Section, 682-5523
FOR IMMEDI TE RELEASE - 2 PAGE FAX
PROJEC CELEBRATE EARTH DAY AT HENDRICKS PARK, WASHBURNE PARK
Starbuck's V lunteers Pull Ivy, Blackberries at Hendricks Park
On Ea h Day, Sunday, April 22, customer and staff volunteers from Eugene Starbuck's
Coffee outlets will gather to work on habitat restoration at Hendricks Park. Volunteer crews
assembled by Maia Fancher, Starbuck's "Green Team" specialist, will remove English ivy and
Himalayan bt~ckberry from a forested area of the park, followed by planting of a variety of
naive specie ,the next step in the restoration process.
The s read of English ivy, listed as a noxious weed by the Oregon Department of
Agriculture, is considered one of the primary threats to the native forest ecosystem of Hendricks
Park. The ha dy, fast-growing ivy smothers native plants on the forest floor and eventually
causes dama a to large native tree species as it climbs the trunks and gets into the crowns of
affected tree .
This y ar's Earth Day project, as well as other volunteer habitat restoration projects at
the park, for an important part of the effort to achieve the vision set out by Eugene citizens in
the Hendrick Park Forest Management Plan published last year. This new vision of the park
recognizes the unique resources of the forest, respects the forest's processes as it matures to
an old-growt habitat, and encourages the conservation and restoration of these resources for
I
present and future generations.
rl (more)
public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
