s ~ ~ ~
~ -
July 10, 2001
C©NTACT:lJohn Gibson, Wastewater Collections Supervisor, 682-4800
Rich Heil, Engineering Project Manager, 682-8307
Frpm Public In ormation Section, 6$2-5523
2-PAGE FAX -FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
EUGENE BE I INS ANNUAL CLEANING AND REPAIR OF UNDERGROUND SEWER LINES
The Ci y of Eugene has begun its annual cleaning and repair of the underground
wastewaters stem.
More t, an 1,200 line segments throughout the city are due for cleaning this summer.
One cleaning drew is working in southeast Eugene, and the other is in the northeast part of the
city. Because a portion of the public wastewater system is located in easements along back lot
property lines workers must "pull in" the high-pressure sewer cleaning hose from the trucks to
manholes loc ' ted in backyards. These lines are not serviced as frequently as those which are
more accessi le, and there is greater potential for roots and other debris to accumulate. If the
lines are not gIleaned, they can become plugged and, in extreme cases, backups could occur.
City ertnployees will knock on doors to obtain permission to access manholes in
backyard easements. if residents are not at home, the crew will leave a door hanger asking
them to cont pct Public Works Maintenance to schedule access. In some case, access to
manholes is r stricted by landscaping, backyard fences or other ornaments( objects placed
over the man ole lids. In these cases it is necessary for the City employees to remove the
objects to open the lid and insert the cleaning hose and nozzle. Every effort is made to restore

the site to ori~inal or better condition upon completion of the work. Dogs can also pose
I
problems for the workers, so residents are asked to keep their dogs chained, penned, or in the
house while the work is being done.
(Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • PAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
