Last year in the U.S., there were 9,862 WNv cases as reported by the CDC, and 264
deaths. Flu related deaths are more than 20,000 every year in this country.
There are no vaccines available for humans, however for horses there are vaccines for
WNv, EEE, and WEE.
The best protection is prevention.
PREVENTION TIPS
• Look around your home and property and eliminate a~I sources of standing water
that can support mosquito breeding, for example gutters, birdbaths and old tires.
• Because mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, avoid playing or working
outside at these times or wear repellent and/or clothing that covers your skin.
• When outdoors, wear long pants, long sleeve shirts and other protective clothing.
• Wear an effective insect repellant. So far, DEET has been found to work the best.
Follow label directions when using any repellant. But, do not apply DEET to
children younger than two.
• Make sure that doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. Repair or replace
screens that have tears or holes. Don't leave doors open without a screen.

Lane County Public Health's West Nile Virus Response
• Lane County Public Health (LCPH) has in place a response system for the
reporting of unusual diseases, clusters and patterns of diseases, and other
conditions. The communicable disease team follows up on these cases.
• LCPH is taking reports of dead crows, blue jays and magpies and submitting them
for testing if there is evidence of a die-off in particular area. Reports of single
birds dying are put into a spreadsheet and LCPH looks for geographic patterns. If
there are two in close proximity (time and geography), the last reported bird is
I.ano Coun#~ Oove~nw~ent 1 Zd E. s"', Eugono, Orogon 97401
541.6s2.~747
