Compaction shall be accomplished using mechan-
ical vibra ors or impact tampers. Wheel rolling by a truck or backhoe shall not be
accepts le.
Within st eets, alleys and sidewalks trench backfill shall consist of 3/4"-0 Crushed
~ ~ Base Ag regate or, with prior approval, controlled density fill. Pea gravel shall not
be allow d as an o tion.
In trench s crossing a street or alley right-of--way at right angles to the alignment,
cement- dded aggregate with a minimum of 1 '/z sacks of portland cement per
cubic yar or CDF may be used. Excavated materials shall not be allowed for use
as trench backfill except in unimproved portions of the public way.
Controlle density fill (CDF), also known as flowable backfill, is a cementious
material fixed, transported, and delivered using normal ready mixed concrete
operation .CDF is a mixture of cement, aggregates, water, and admixtures such
as fly as proportioned to provide anon-segregating, self consolidating, free-
flowing a d excavatable material. CDF is a hardened, dense, non-settling fill that
requires o compaction effort.
Traffic m y temporarily be placed directly upon CDF prior to paving as soon as it
has suffi iently hardened so that the surface will withstand traffic or construction
equipme t loading without deformation. If CDF is used as a temporary surface
~ j restoratio material, the surface shall be maintained and repaired due to damage
by traffic.
"I t~. All portla d cement concrete used in the replacement of streets, alleys or sidewalks
shall obt in a minimum breaking strength of 3,300 psi in 28 days and conform to
sections 12 through 215 of the Standard Specifications.
All ornam ntal surfacing shall be replaced "in-kind" to that surfacing removed.
Where s tions of sidewalk are requested to be removed by the permittee, they
shall be r moved to the nearest existing score or joint in each direction.
Where s tions of curb or curb and gutter are removed by the permittee, amini-
~ mum oft n (10) linear feet of curb and gutter shall be removed and replaced. An
alternativ to this requirement shall be removing and replacing three (3) linear feet
~ of curb a d gutter with the new curb and gutter tied into the existing curb by
inserting "X #4 rebar dowels into drilled one-half inch diameter by three (3) inch
deep hol sin the adjoining existing curbs and gutters, one dowel in the curb and
two dowe s in the gutter at each end of the replaced section.

Utility & R/W Permit P licy 17 06/01/97
i
