place the matter on the ballot. The judge disagreed last week and directed the City to accept and
certify the petition to refer the issue to the voters. Next Wednesday, the City Council will consider
what further action they may want to take with the gas tax issue.
Eugene lacks adequate funding to operate, maintain and preserve its local street system. The gas
tax increase was one component of a comprehensive package of solutions adopted by the City
Council that would collectively provide an ongoing, sustainable, locally-controlled revenue stream to
meet Eugene's transportation funding needs.
In her comments today, Mayor Kitty Piercy emphasized the importance of these council efforts to
address Eugene's street funding needs with focal solutions when she stated, "Repairing and
maintaining our roads is a top priority for our community members. We see this in survey results,
and we hear it in talking with people. Unfortunately, we have been abandoned by the state and

federal governments, so that now this is a local issue to solve. I hope the voters understand that if

they want the potholes fixed, we need to raise funds locally to do it."
2
