The appeal had been filed to preserve the City's options until the council had an <br /> o~p ortunity to discuss the alternatives around the gas tax ordinance. <br /> T!h current tax is five cents per gallon in Eugene and was scheduled to decrease to three cents per <br /> g Ion on February 29, 2008. Council action in May authorized the increase of the tax from five cents <br /> p~e gallon to eight cents per gallon and also would have ensured the tax did not decrease in February <br /> 20 8, but would instead remain at the eight cents per gallon level. <br /> <br /> ~Pe itioners submitted signatures in June to refer the council's action to the voters. The petition was <br /> irhit ally rejected by the City on the grounds that insufficient qualified slgnatures were gathered to <br /> i <br /> <br />
