Kevin Finney, Delta Ponds Project Manager j 682-6018 -----Original Message----- From: FINNEY Kevin P Sent: Thursday, March 11, 2004 9:44 AM To: FINNEY Kevin P Subject: Status Report on the Delta Ponds Project To the Delta Ponds Partners: In the two months since we last updated you on the progress of the Delta Ponds project we have reached several significant milestones including: • The City has hired Lauri Mullen as the Delta Ponds Vegetation Enhancement Coordinator. Ms. Mullen has hit the ground running and will be working with City and Corps staff over the next two years to eradicate invasive plants in the project area and to ensure the success of the subsequent native plantings. She has been coordinating the clearing efforts of the County Jail crews and they have accomplished an impressive amount of clearing on the north end of the site. • The zone change application and Willamette Greenway permit required for the project were approved by City Planning staff. • Lane County Commissioners gave the go-ahead for County staff to complete the survey work necessary for the transfer of County property to the City for the project. Upcoming milestones and ongoing work on the project include: • Under the direction of Carolyn Weiss, Recreation Lead for the Delta Ponds project, City staff has completed the majority of the survey work for the Rotary Centennial Path. Several alignment options are being considered and plans are in development. Path construction is anticipated to begin in May or June of this year. • A contract for invasive species removal work will be let by the Army Corps of Engineers this summer. In the meantime City staff will use contractors and jail crews to reduce the invasive species problem on the site. All work will be timed to minimize habitat disruption and to protect nesting birds. City staff has mapped the invasive and high-value native habitat areas in the ponds system and will be working with the Corps and their contractor to ensure the success of this important aspect of the restoration work. • City and Lane County staff continue to meet periodically to work on the transfer of County lands along Delta Highway for the project. The Project Team will continue to work on the following aspects of the project over the next few months: • Permits - We are preparing applications for our permits from the Water Resource Department, Division of State Lands 1 _ _
