Amazon Headwaters Trail Proposal - 2003.0610 <br /> Johnny Medlin <br /> Parks & Open Space Division <br /> City of Eugene , <br /> 1820 Roosevelt Boulevard <br /> Eugene,• OR 9701 ~ . <br /> 541-682-4800 vox <br /> Dear Johnny Medlin, <br /> Southeast Neighbors (SEN) would ffke to sincerely thank you for your willingness to <br /> consider this pro~usal regarding trail development in the sensitive area of the Amazon <br /> Creek Headwaterr in southeast Eugene. <br /> Fundamental to oar goats for this proposal is to balance and simultaneously meet the needs <br /> and desires of imrr~~ttediate neighbors, the neighborhood overall, and the ~Y itself in terms of <br /> citizens and admi~i'istration alike, to the extent that those needs and desires can be <br /> understood. <br /> Connecting the ric~geline park system with the Amazon greenway seems to be very - ' <br /> broadly understood as a positive and important pro]e~ct: •S.o thedetails of this proposal <br /> relate to the specific locations and~timirng for making that valuable cxinnnection. <br /> Please consider these pofits, which are numbered for convenience: of reference only: <br /> i) There is no cx~troversy regarding the city's proposed trail route from the BPA power <br /> line easement u lfill to the Ridgeiine Traif proper, which could be referred to as the "upper <br /> Headwaters Trail" This proposal perFains to the tower section, connecting downhill from the <br /> BPA easemenrt to the Amazon greenway, which could be referred to as the "lower <br /> Headwaters TraU".! . <br /> 2) Rather than chquosing between either a Canyon Drive trait head or a West Amazon trail <br /> head, SEN proposes that collectively we proceed with-both, - • <br /> 3~ For general ne'~ hborhood accessibility, and considering established patterns of . <br /> sign'ficant use, SEN sees particular value in a West Amazon terminus for the Headwaters <br /> Trail, recognizing apd making use of the existing infomiai trail aGgnmerrt along the <br /> undeveloped West Amazon road right-of-way. <br /> 41 Because resources are limited in general, and because it could be inappropriate for <br /> significant aty resources to be spent developing trail sections with an unc:ertam long-term <br /> future, SEN piedg~s that in the context of this proposal we would provide the necessary <br /> volunteer labor and materials for pedestrian bridge construction, and volunteer labor for <br /> `ongoing trail maintenance along the West Amazon trait section. <br /> www.Sou+i~eastKei9hbors.or9 page 1 <br /> <br />
