The first phase of the Hays Memorial Tree Garden will be dedicated in a ceremony and tree <br /> planting at noon n Monday, May 3. The new tree garden is located just north of the Cuthbert <br /> Amphitheatre in lton Baker Park. Parking is available in the Wistec parking lot off Centennial <br /> Boulevard. <br /> Mayor J m Torrey will be joined by former Mayor Ruth Bascom in dedicating the tree garden. <br /> .Bascom in 1994 uggested the development of a trust fund to receive donations for the tree garden, and <br /> 4 <br /> j she set the idea i motion by donating $100,000 to the trust fund. <br /> i <br /> The arb return will display a variety of trees selected for their spring blossoms and fall leaf <br /> color. Eventuall ,the tree garden will cover up to 20 acres in Alton Baker Park. <br /> Develop ent of the tree garden is supported solely by donations from private citizens. Donated <br /> funds can be use to pay for planting trees or for installing other amenities such as specially <br /> manufactured le f tiles, artwork, benches, and seating areas. Future phases will allow opportunities to <br /> donate larger fe tures such as footbridges. <br /> Work b gan on the first phase of the tree garden last November. Completed construction <br /> includes an entr plaza, light fixtures, pedestrian paths with donor curbing that will accommodate <br /> memorial tiles f r donors, and viewing paths that will provide access to individual memorial tree <br /> locations.
