: ~ ~ :
November 4, 19 9
CONTACT: T erese Walch, Water Resource Manager, 682-6839
From Public Inf rmation Section, 682-5523
FOR IMMED TE RELEASE
KEY WA ERWAYS POLICY SUBJECT OF NOVEMBER 10 PUBLIC MEETING
Eugene esidents can learn more about a new proposed key storm waterways policy at an
informational d p-in session on Wednesday, November 10. The session will run from 4 to 8 p.m. at
Hilyard Comm ity Center, 2580 Hilyard Street, with formal presentations at 5 and 7 p.m.
The Cit of Eugene is evaluating approximately 98 miles of key storm waterways within the
city limits to cl ify which portions of the stormwater drainage system should remain as open
waterways rath than being filled, piped or channelized. The proposed policy would designate 82 of
these 98 miles a key waterways. Besides flood protection, open waterways also provide benefits
such as wildlife habitat, scenic value, erosion control, and improved stormwater quality.
Most ke waterways are in developed areas where the policy merely recognizes the existing
conditions and larifies which portions of the open waterways function as part of the City's
stormwater con eyance system. In these areas, the proposed policy will have little or no effect on
most properties. In vacant areas that may ultimately be developed, the proposed policy requires key
storm waterway to remain open and be accommodated within future development proposals. The
policy does not hange the permissible land uses of affected properties.
Feedba received at the public information session will be provided to the City Council at a
November 22 p blic hearing on the key waterways policy. For more information, contact the City of
Eugene at 682- 291, or on the Internet at www.ci.eugene.or.us/pw/storm/dac.

-III ublic Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
it Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
