One of the
I
jhardest hit area was Hendricks Park, where at least 20 fir trees shallowly rooted in rain-saturated
jsoils came cras ing down as a result of the storm. No injuries were reported, but two large trees
(crushed the po ular picnic shelter at the park. The City has begun the process of replacing the
I
historic structu e. Falling trees struck three homes on the east side of the park. Damage to two
of the homes w s relatively minor, and a damage estimate for the third home is not available at
,this time.
Public orks officials are in the process of determining whether any of the trees that fell
~ at Hendricks P rk had previously been identified as potential hazards. The City in December
1997 removed ix of the most serious hazards and has been working for a year with neighbors in
j the area on a I ng-term plan to address hazards and manage the urban forest in the park. City
officials today ade arrangements for consultants to assess the remaining trees on the east side
of the park.

~r'
Public Works • Admi istration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl • Eugene, OR 97401-2727 • Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX (541 } 682-6826
