_ ~
~I April 24, 1998
~ CONTACT: Michael Robert, Hendricks Park Head Gardener, 682-5324
From Public Information Section, 682-5523
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
N IN FULL BLOOM AT HENDRICKS PARK
RHODODENDRO S
I' The rhododendrons and companion plants at Hendricks Park are in full bloom
now. The mild winter encouraged an early start of the blooming season and the cool spring has
encouraged a long blooming season. Many of the rhododendrons are in peak bloom now, and if
you wait until Mother's Day to visit Hendricks Park, you'll missed part of the show.
The park's gardeners will provide tours every Sunday in May beginning at 1 p.m. in the
picnic shelter at the top of Summit Avenue. The tour guides offer a brief history of the park and
the Rhododendron Garden and lead a walk through the garden identifying plants and answering
gardening questions.
II Many of the charter members of the American Rhododendron Society (ARS) and the
Eugene chapter of the ARS were founders of the Rhododendron Garden at Hendricks Park, and
many of their collected plants and hybrids are now in bloom. The hybrid rhododendron
`Tumalo,' which was crossed by Del and Ray James is showy now with its ruffled white flowers;
the hybrid `Hendricks Park' is also in bloom. The fragrant group of Loderi Rhododendrons are
also in bloom and they give a sweet smell to the whole garden. A great attraction each year is the
i
Dave tree, (Davidia involucrata.) This Chinese tree came to Eugene from James Barto, the
earliest rhododendron collector in the area. Its showy bracts are opening along with the tree's
leaves, making you look twice to see the flowers.

Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl • Eugene, OR 97401-2727 • Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX (541) 682-6826
