~ ~
~ ~ ~
June 12, 1998
CONTACT: Rick Bates, Maintenance Technician, 682-4800
From Public Information Section, 682-5523
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ANNUAL SMOKE TESTING OF WASTEWATER LINES TO BEGIN IN MID-JUNE
More than 50 miles of underground wastewater lines in Eugene are scheduled to be smoke tested
~I
I, beginning in mid-June. The City's Public Works Department each year tests portions of the wastewater
collection system to locate defects and improper connections that allow stormwater runoff and
groundwater to enter the system.
This year's testing includes portions of the wastewater collection system in south and west
Eu ene and on the Universit of Ore on cam us. Testin is scheduled to be in June 16 in the area of
g Y g P g g
ICI; West 11~' Avenue and McKinley Street, working to the west, and eventually including the entire area
roughly bounded by McKinley on the east, ls` Avenue on the north, and the city limits on the west and
south. The campus system is owned and maintained by the UO but connects to the public wastewater
collection and treatment system.
During the tests, which are endorsed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, nontoxic,
white smoke is released into both public and private wastewater collection lines to identify problems.
i Residents are notified before testing begins in their neighborhood. The smoke does not harm plants or
I'I animals and quickly dissipates leaving no residue or stains.
I After smoke is blown into a wastewater line, crew members look for signs of
deteriorated lines or improper connections. White smoke rising from the ground generally indicates a
crack or other defect in a wastewater line. Smoke coming from a roof gutter, downspout or area drain
indicates that a storm drain is improperly connected to the wastewater collection system.
Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl • Eugene, OR 97401-2727 • Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX (541) 682-6826
