I
i ~i ~~~J¦~~~
June 16, 1998
~'ONTACT: John Emmons, Transportation Systems Supervisor, 682-5218
I?rom Public Information Section, 682-5523
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
COMPUTER UPGRADE WILL AFFECT TRAFFIC SIGNALS ON WEDNESDAY
Motorists. should be extra cautious when approaching traffic signals in Eugene on
Wednesday, June 17. City Public Works crews will be upgrading software in the controller units
o~ each of City's 209 traffic signals.
III During the 5 to 10 minutes it takes to change the software, the signal will be switched to
i
fl~shing red in all directions. That means motorists must come to a complete stop and yield to
other vehicles in the intersection. Motorists will also notice unexpected stops in the downtown
arlea and on Sixth and Seventh avenues and other major streets as synchronization of timing
b~tween signals will be lost during the change-over.
I
~I The upgrades are necessary because parts for the computer that has run the City's traffic
si~nals for the past 15 years have become obsolete and the central computer can no longer be
maintained. The new traffic control computer system will be more efficient to maintain and also
willl offer new programming options.
i
Public Works crews hope to complete the changeover in one or two days. Residents with
questions about specific traffic signals can contact the Public Works Transportation Division at
682-5218.

Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl • Eugene, OR 97401-2727 • Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX (541) 682-6826
