~
~J i~ inin r+
II
August 4, 1995
CONTACT: John Emmons, Traffic System Supervisor, 682-5218
From Public Information Section, 682-5523
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
i
~I
II SYGNAL CHANGES AT 18TH AND BAILEY HILL IMPROVE SAFETY, EFFICIENCY
~i
The intersection of 18`" Avenue and Bailey Hill Road will be safer and more efficient for
motorists and pedestrians next week when Eugene Public Works crews finish upgrading the
' signals and signal-timing equipment.
i
~II Workers from the Public Works Transportation Division already have put in new poles
with longer mast arms and installed new signal equipment. On Wednesday, August 5, crews are
li scheduled to make the final wiring connections to activate the new equipment. Estimated cost of
the work is $45,000, paid from the City's road fund.
i
Once activated, the new equipment will allow northbound and southbound traffic on
Bailey Hill to make protected left turns onto 18`" Avenue. Currently, left-turning traffic on
Bailey Hill must wait for a break in oncoming traffic, then proceed with extra caution because
III Bailey Hill angles into the intersection on the south side of 18`". For eastbound and westbound
Iii traffic on 18`" Avenue, the upgraded signals will allow protected and permissive left turns and
also will cut down delays by providing concurrent green lights for through traffic. Currently,
green lights are staggered for eastbound and westbound traffic on 18`".
For updated information about traffic control changes and local road construction
projects, call the City of Eugene traffic relief hotline at 984-8484.

Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl • Eugene, OR 97401-2727 • Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX (541) 682-6826
