August 27, 1998
CONTACT: Gary Ludeke, Traffic Engineer, 682-5237
~rom Public Information Section, 682-5523
1~'OR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
I
ADDED TURN LANE AT FOOT OF I-105 OFFRAMP WILL REDUCE BACKUPS
The Eugene Public Works Department is striping a second left turn lane at the foot of the
southbound I-105 offramp onto eastbound Seventh Avenue to reduce backups on the
ashington-Jefferson Street Bridge. The new lane is expected to be operational by mid-morning
~n Friday, August 28.
I~ To avoid the construction work being done in the Ferry Street Bridge corridor, motorists
ave been advised to use I-105 as an alternate route. This has increased traffic on the
ashington-Jefferson Street Bridge, creating long lines for southbound traffic at certain times of
fhe day. The second turn lane will help alleviate the congestion caused by the additional traffic.
i
III Motorists desiring to use either of the left two lanes on Seventh Avenue should keep left
they approach Seventh on the offramp. Those desiring to use either of the right two lanes on
eventh should use the offramp's center lane, which allows traffic to either go south across
eventh onto Jefferson or to turn left onto Seventh. The right lane on the I-105 offramp
ontinues to be reserved for traffic southbound on Jefferson.
The City recently installed a video camera at the foot of the offramp, allowing the
addition of the second left lane without the need to cut another loop detector into the pavement to
detect traffic for signal actuation.

Publi'p~ Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl • Eugene, OR 97401-2727 • Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX (541) 682-6826
