The section between 13`h and 20`'' avenues will be
Increased to 25 mph from 20 mph, and the section between 20"' and 32nd avenues will be
giecreased to 25 mph from 30 mph. Orange flags mounted on the speed zone signs will help alert
motorists to the changes.
The increase to 25 mph is being made to establish speed zones consistent with those on
similar streets in the same area. Olive, Oak, Pearl and High Streets are all posted for 25 mph
south of 13`'' Avenue. The decrease to 25 mph was prompted by a petition from businesses along
Willamette between 24`h and 29`h avenues asking that steps be taken to improve traffic safety for
pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.
A speed zone study conducted by the Public Works Transportation Division found that a
1 wer s eed zone from 20`h to 32"d avenues was most appropriate, given the high potential for
p
accidents on that section of Willamette. Factors considered in the study included the numerous
dl~ iveways with high volumes of vehicles entering and exiting the roadway, the lack of center left
ttXrn lanes, and the lack of right turn lanes at the signalized intersections on Willamette at 24`h
2~`h and 29 avenues.

Pubiia Works • Administration .City of Eugene • 858 Pearl • Eugene, OR 97401-2727 • Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX (541) 682-6826
