~ctober 8, 1998 {CONTACT: Terry Colvin, Project Manager, 682-5560 ~I Diane Bishop, Bicycle Coordinator, 682-5218 rom Public Information Section, 682-5523 OR IMMEDIATE RELEASE BIKE PATH PAVING WORK SCHEDULED THIS FALL A project to restore several sections of the Fern Ridge Path and a short section of the North Bank 'rail in Alton Baker Park is scheduled to begin this month. Brown Construction of Eugene has been awarded the contract for the City of Eugene project to rehabilitate portions of the bicycle and pedestrian path along Amazon Creek in west Eugene and a ~ection of the North Bank Trail from Day Island Road east approximately 400 feet. The estimated cost bf the project is $275,000. The work on the Fern Ridge Path is scheduled to start October 22 and includes removing areas of deteriorated pavement and constructing a new concrete surface in several sections: City View to Oak Patch Road, Acorn Park Street to the Richardson Bridge creek crossing, and, possibly, Richardson Bridge to Bailey Hill Road. In Alton Baker Park, starting October 12 workers will remove and regrade the existing asphalt path and construct a new, level path. i~ Work in both areas is expected to be substantially completed by mid-November. The section of I~'ern Ridge Path from Oak Patch to Acorn Park will be delayed until next year in order to accommodate a li-lealignment of the path. The realignment wilt allow for future enhancements to Amazon Creek similar tp the work recently done west of Bailey Hill Road. i Cyclists and pedestrians will need to use alternate routes while path sections are being repaired. Signs have been posted on the Fern Ridge Path showing nearby streets that can be used to avoid construction zones. Cyclists and pedestrians traveling through Alton Baker Park will be directed to use the old Walnut Street roadbed that runs parallel to the North Bank Trail.
