PAGE 2 -BASEBALL COMPLEX
t~e complex available to other recreational users such as Kidsports at least seven days each
month.
To build the facility, the Babe Ruth organization will need to raise $1.5 million through
dpnated services, financial contributions and grants. The organization plans to launch a major
f~nd raising campaign next month chaired by former University of Oregon baseball coach Mel
Krause. Babe Ruth officials hope the new complex will be ready for play in the spring of 1999.
The City of Eugene has agreed to extend utilities to the park site, and Lane County is
partnering with the City in providing access to the baseball facility. Bethel School District and
t e City jointly purchased 69 acres that includes the school site and the new park. The City
a d School District 52 have considered each other's needs during the planning process and
envision jointly sharing parking and athletic facilities.
This partnership could mark the first time more than two governmental jurisdictions
hive participated with a private entity to provide new recreational facilities. The City, however,
his in the past, worked with both Bethel and Eugene 4J school districts to coordinate the
purchase of adjoining property that would benefit both school and park users.
The City is also working with the Active Bethel Citizens neighborhood organization on
developing plans for the remainder of the park site. The park could potentially include new

s~ccer fields or tennis courts in west Eugene.
I
~I
~I
I
