I.I ~
_ ~
I
December 12, 1 97
CONTACT: S ott Plamondon, Urban Forester, 682-4820
From Public In rmation Section, 682-5523
FOR IlVIMED TE RELEASE
i
TOPS OF S HAZARD TREES TO BE REMOVED AT HENDRICKS PARK NEXT WEEK
~ To tem orarily stabilize six hazardous trees in Hendricks Park, their tops will be removed next
I
week. Three of er dead trees in the park's floral garden also will be removed.
The Ci of Eugene has contracted with LJ Tree Service to remove the tops of the six trees,
located on the a st boundary of the park, near several homes and the park's the picnic shelter. Work is
scheduled to be in Tuesday, December lf~, and is expected to take a day or two to complete.
With wi ter approaching, it was decided to stabilize the hazard trees until additional habitat
assessments cou d be made. The City has asked wildlife experts to review the trees to see if there are
opportunities to reate habitat by leaving snags and other portions of trees left once the immediate
hazards for near y neighbors and park users have been removed.
After se eral large trees fell near the picnic shelter during the past couple of winters, the City's
urban forester a d consulting arborists reviewed the condition of the trees on the east side of Hendricks
Park and identifi d 19 trees with significant defects and high hazard ratings. Although some citizens
have expressed oncerns about removing any trees from Hendricks Park, the City has decided that the
most prudent co rse of action is to remove six of the highest hazards this winter. The remaining trees
will be consider d as part of a proposed long-term urban forestry plan for the park. This week the City
Council approve funding to begin work on the forest management plan, which will address tree
'plantings, creati n of habitat trees, drainage strategies, and other measures to restore the forest ecosystem
at Hendricks Par .The Public Works Department plans to form an advisory committee to help guide the
development of t e long-term management plan in early 1998.

Publile Works • Adminis ration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl • Eugene, OR 97401-2727 • Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX (541) 682-6826
