News R ease Willakenzie Signal
Apri128, 1997
Page 2

~i T e new signal is the latest in a series of safety improvements made on Willakenzie Road
over the p st several years. In 1995, the City installed afour-way stop and pedestrian crossing
I~
on Willake ie at the intersection with the main driveway to Sheldon High. The following year,
the City de ignated a new crosswalk where the signal is now located. The new crosswalk
featured "c ntinental-style" markings, which are highly visible, wide vertical stripes painted the
full width o the crosswalk.
After the continental-style crossing was installed, parents continued to request a signal or
other traffic ontrol to make the crossing even safer for students, particularly those enrolled in
the Life Skill program at Sheldon. Their request joined the lengthy list of citywide signal needs
competing for limited funding.
I Mayor im Torrey and the Eugene Rotary Club, recognizing the unique safety needs in
this situation, ere able to assist in reducing the project's cost by finding volunteers with the
skill, equipmen ,and experience to do a portion of the work. The new signal benefits the 1,450
:students at Shel on as well as nearby apartment residents and other pedestrians crossing to and
From the many s ops along Coburg and Willakenzie roads.
'I
I
I
