~~~~~~L <br /> J~~ <br /> APRIL 5, 1996 <br /> Public Works <br /> Administration <br /> CONTACT: Scott Plamondon, Urban Forester, 687-5220 City of Eugene <br /> 858 Pearl Street <br /> From Public Information Section, 687-5523 Eugene, OR 97401 <br /> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (503) 687-5262 <br /> TREE PLANTINGS COMMEMORATE ARBOR WEEK <br /> Arbor Week will be celebrated in Eugene with scores of tree plantings through the city. <br /> Most of the plantings will be done by volunteers in coordination with the city's NeighborWoods <br /> program. <br /> One of the largest plantings will be along Amazon Creek on Saturday, April 13. When <br /> they mature, the 25 young trees to be set in place just east of Bailey Hill Road will provide shade <br /> along the bicycle and pedestrian path and help create and improve creek habitat azeas. Other <br /> scheduled plantings include Woodside Drive on April 8, Willamette High school on Apri19, <br /> Monroe Middle School and Flintridge Avenue on April 10, Roosevelt Middle School and West <br /> 27th Avenue on April 1 1, Ida Patterson Elementary School on April 12, and several woonerfs in <br /> the west university neighborhood on April 13. <br /> Eugene's Urban Forestry Program, which includes the popular NeighborWoods program, <br /> has helped earn the city its 17th annual Tree City USA award. The Tree City USA program is <br /> sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the US Forest Service and <br /> <br /> the National Association of State Foresters. During the 1995 planting season, some 250 <br /> <br /> volunteers planted more than 700 trees as part of the NeighborWoods program. An awazd <br /> <br /> ceremony to honor NeighborWoods volunteer coordinators is slated in May. <br /> <br />
