_~%%/I %/I`~%%%%/%%~~~% <br /> t <br /> 5~~~~'L <br /> J~~ <br /> MAY 10, 1996 <br /> Public Works <br /> Administration <br /> CONTACT: Jeff Lankston, Acting City Engineer, 687-5560 City of Eugene <br /> 858 Pearl Street <br /> From Public Information Section, 687-5523 Eugene, OR 97401 <br /> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (503) 687-5262 <br /> WILLAMETTE STREET CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN MONDAY <br /> Work is scheduled to begin Monday afternoon on a $1.8 million project to reopen <br /> Willamette Street between Eight and Tenth avenues and construct a new plaza at the intersection <br /> of Broadway and Willamette. <br /> Crews from Wildish Construction Co. will begin demolition work in the fountain area at <br /> 3 p.m. Monday, following a news conference with Mayor Ruth Bascom at 10 a.m. and an open <br /> house sponsored by Downtown Eugene Inc. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Demolition work is <br /> scheduled to continue Tuesday and Wednesday beginning at 3 p.m. and continuing into the <br /> evening. As the project progresses, construction hours will vary depending on the type of work <br /> being done. <br /> During construction, pedestrian access will be maintained to all downtown businesses. <br /> Both Eighth and Tenth avenues will remain open during construction although there may be <br /> occasional lane closures in the area of Willamette Street. The project is scheduled to be <br /> completed by mid-September, in time for the Eugene Celebration. <br /> When completed, the reopened section of Willamette Street will accommodate two-way <br /> <br /> traffic and provide onstreet parking, bicycle parking racks, spacious sidewalks, street trees, <br /> streetlights, and a central plaza area with decorative brick paving and other amenities. <br /> (more) <br /> <br />
