Asocial begins at 8:30 a.m.,
followed by the dedication ceremony at 9 a.m. Speakers will include Eugene Mayor Ruth
Bascom, Lane County Commissioners Bobby Green and Jerry Rust, local Applegate Trail
Committee Coordinator Doug Card, and a variety of other people interested in local history.
In April, the Eugene Department of Public Works restored the replica of the cabin built
by city founders Eugene and Mary Skinner in 1846 and moved it to a new location that is more
accessible and closer to the original cabin site. Four interpretive signs will provide historical
information about the Skinners and the cabin they built at the foot of the butte that today bears
their name. A $15,000 grant from the Oregon Trail commemorative license plate program and
matching funds from the local Gladys McCready fund helped pay for the restoration, relocation,
and interpretive signage.
The relocation of Skinner's cabin is one of many projects commemorating the 150th
anniversary of the Applegate Trail, which brought many pioneer families to this area. The
dedication ceremony is also part of Lane County's celebration of National Historic Preservation
Week. Celebrations also are scheduled Saturday at Washburne State Wayside, Richardson Park,

y Zumwalt Park, and Cottage Grove.
