~ ~7/ ~ ~i I/~~ f~' 7/1//i////~~~]/f)rr ~l/tom
l~~~irri~~~~~ iii
~1 i~il~~~i
~~~r~~
July 3, 1996
CONTACT: Ginny Alfriend, Hendricks Park, 687-5324
From Public Information Section, 465-2739
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
I~I VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO PULL IVY AT HENDRICKS PARK
Volunteers are needed to join the "no ivy league" on Friday, July 5, to remove invasive
ivy from Hendricks Parks' massive Douglas fir trees and other trees and grounds to prevent
further spreading of the non-native plants. Meet at 10 a.m. in the covered picnic shelter in
I
Hendricks Park.
Members of Eugene's National Guard will continue the work on Friday, July 13
beginning at 9:00 a.m. as they volunteer their energies to the cause. This is the second time this
year, the group has helped in removing ivy from the park.
When the ivy climbs uprights, it can produce seeds. Growing by rooting runners along
the ground, it smothers low growing plants. Hendricks Park has achieved worldwide recognition
for its large displays of rhododendrons and other plants and the ivy pull efforts hope to maintain
that world class status.
The park is accessible by car, bicycle or bus. For more information, call 687-5324.
Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401 • Phone: (541) 687-5262 • FAX: (541) 683-6826
