November 1 , 1996 Public Works
Administration
CONTACT Bob Hammitt, Maintenance Director, 687-5220 City of Eugene
858 Pearl Street
Eugene, OR 97401
From Public Information Section, 687-5523 (503) 687-5262
FOR IMM DIATE RELEASE
H VY RAINS FLOOD INTERSECTIONS, WASTEWATER SYSTEM
Seve al days of continuing heavy rain have left Eugene residents coping with flooded
intersections overflowing roadside ditches, and overloaded wastewater lines.

i
Muc of the surface flooding is caused by soggy leaves plugging up stormwater catch
basins. Cre s from Eugene Public Works responded to more than 150 service calls starting early
Monday mo ing, and more calls are expected overnight and Tuesday with heavy rain in the
forecast. Re idents who need to report flooding conditions can call Public Works Maintenance
at 687-5220.
Mai tenance Director Bob Hammitt said the Amazon Creek, which handles much of the
drainage in ugene, still appears to have plenty of capacity. However, many smaller stormwater
pipes and di ches are overflowing and flooding streets and intersections. Motorists are asked to
use extreme caution in flooded areas.
Me while, the wet weather has overloaded portions of the wastewater collection system.
As of 4 p.m. today, stormwater and sewage were being diverted from the wastewater system
directly to a Willamette River from the Fillmore, Glenwood, and Willakenzie pump stations.
Stormwater d sewage is also entering the storm drainage system from the wastewater system at
a connectio point at 10th Avenue and Tyler Street in Eugene.
