~i i~ ~i iii iiii
iii ~~ri~t.~r~ir~i,i~~
September 18, 1996 ~ Public Works
Administration
City of Eugene
' CONTACT: Diane Bishop, Bicycle Program Coordinator, 687-5218 858 Pearl Street
Eugene, OR 97401
From Public Infarmation Section, 687-5523 (503) 687-5262
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CELEBRATE WITH FREE CONVENIENT BICYCLE PARKING
Dozens of new bicycle parking racks await area residents who choose to ride to the
Eugene Celebration this weekend.
The 75 permanent parking spaces installed by the City of Eugene during the past month
bring free, convenient bicycle parking to almost every location in the downtown area. The new
and existing bicycle parking facilities come in a variety of designs: cages, lockers, "wave" racks,
and the latest style individual hoop racks. New green-and-white signs direct cyclists to nearby

i parking. Completion of the Willamette Street reopening project will add another 90 bicycle
parking spaces downtown. In addition to the onstreet facilities, this fall the City also plans to
begin providing bicycle parking in several downtown parking structures, including two new
parking garages currently under construction at 10th Avenue and Pearl Street.
The installation of safe, convenient bicycle parking facilities is part of an ongoing City of
Eugene program designed to encourage and increase the use of bicycles as an alternative form of
transportation. The City is currently working with a citizen advisory committee to find ways to
further increase the use of bicycles by commuters and shoppers in the downtown area. Funding
for the bicycle parking program is provided through the parking service fund.
For more information about Eugene's bicycle program, call 687-5218.
