iJ I. /1~~~/~1/ice/T~~i
'//////IL~'~///////`~~/
~I~ L
5~~~~~L
JI ~
Public Works
Administration
City of Eugene
JANUARY 18, 1996 858 Pearl Street
Eugene, OR 97401
CONTACT: John Etter, Pazks Planner, 687-5325 (503) 687-5262
From Public Information Section, 687-5523
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CITY ACQUIRES RADIO TOWER SITE AT ALTON BAKER PARK
The City of Eugene has acquired title to the radio broadcast tower site in Alton Baker
Park. The 4.7-acre site is located south of Autzen Stadium, close to the Willamette River and
adjacent to portions of the canoe canal and Pre's Trail.
Securing the site has been an objective of planners of the park since Alton Baker Park
was established in 1970, and envisioned for more than 20 yeazs eazlier. Approximately 1.5 acres
of the site is immediately available for use by the public as open space. The remaining 3.2 acres
is subject to a lease that terminates in 19 yeazs, at which time the Albany Radio Corporation is
required to remove the towers and other above-grade equipment.
The acquisition was made possible by a trade, suggested by the owner of the radio
station, involving a small parcel of the Ridgeline Pazk near Blanton Road. Because the .85-acre

parcel is outside the city's urban growth boundary and remains zoned for forest use, it cannot be

built upon, and it will remain as open space.
