/I I`~~
FEBRUARY 28, 1996
Public Works
CONTACT: Bob Hammitt, Maintenance Director, 687-5220 Administration
City of Eugene
858 Pearl Street
From Public Information Section, 687-5523 Eugene, OR 97401
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (503) 687-5262
SNOW/ICE EMERGENCY PARKING BAN REMAINS IN EFFECT
The ice/snow emergency declazed Tuesday night in Eugene remains in effect Wednesday
evening as the National Weather Service continues to forecast freezing temperatures overnight.
Public Works Maintenance Director Bob Hammitt said he will evaluate weather and road
conditions Thursday morning to see if the emergency parking ban should be lifted. While the
snow/ice emergency is in effect, all vehicles must be removed from designated snow emergency
routes. Vehicles stranded on emergency routes during the heavy snow last night and this
morning should be moved early this evening before streets become icy again. City sanding
trucks will operate through the night if icy conditions develop, Hammitt said.
Residents also are encouraged to visually inspect trees on their property for broken limbs
and other hazardous conditions. Eugene Public Works has received more than 200 reports of
damaged trees in the past 24 hours, and hazard reports continue to pour into the department's
Emergency Command Center Wednesday afternoon.
Hammitt advises residents to be very cautious around trees until they have been cazefully
inspected. If limbs are touching a power line, call the Eugene Water & Electric Board

immediately. Damaged street trees should be reported to Public Works Maintenance at 687-5220.

Contact a tree service about damage to trees on private property.
