The
change is consistent with the Central Area Transportation Study, adopted in 1993 as the
transportation planning guideline for the downtown area.
Allowing two-way traffic will improve access to businesses on Charnelton and increase
transit routing options. The southbound bike lane installed on that section of street in 1994 will
be retained, as will existing onstreet parking. A stop sign will be installed for northbound traffic
on Charnelton Street at Fifth Avenue.
Local residents have been notified by the City, and signs will be posted to inform
motorists of all traffic control changes. Later this spring, the City plans to make similar
conversions to Jefferson Street between First and Sixth avenues and to Washington Street

between Clark Street and Fifth Avenue.
