J I. ~/i 1 /i JI/ TI/1i
I ~ ~1 /
MARCH 29, 1996 Public Works
Administration
CONTACT: Joe Hessler Traffic En ineerin Technician, 687-5285 City of Eugene
g g 858 Pearl Street
Eugene, OR 97401
From Public Information Section, 687-5523 (503) 687-5262
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PARTS OF WASHINGTON, JEFFERSON CONVERTED TO 2-WAY TRAFFIC
Two one-way streets in the Whiteaker neighborhood will be converted to allow two-way

traffic on Wednesday, Apri13. The streets are Jefferson Street between First and Sixth avenues,
and Washington Street between Clark Street and Fifth Avenue.
Motorists may experience some minor delays while the work is being done, but one lane
of traffic will be kept open as each street is changed to two-way operation. Due to the amount of
work involved, the project may take two days. At a minimum, the sections of both streets

between First and Firth avenues will be converted to two-way operation on April 3. Any work

not completed on Apri13 will be done on Apri14.
The return to two-way traffic on the two streets is consistent with the policies in the
Whiteaker Plan designed to improve through traffic routes in order to reduce traffic on

neighborhood residential streets. It also will improve access for emergency vehicles and provide

more bus routing options.
The design for each street includes one travel lane and one bike lane in each direction.

The amount of onstreet parking won't change, but vehicles will be required to park in the

apposite direction after the change. Access to the parking bays adjacent to Washington-Jefferson

Park may be restricted while the work is being done.
