Apri12, 1996
CONTACT: Michael Robert, Hendricks Pazk Head Gazdener, 687-5324
From Public Information Section, 465-2739
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
"FIRST FRIDAY -PULL IVY AT HENDRICKS PARK"
Volunteers are needed to remove invasive ivy from Hendricks Park's massive Douglas fir
trees and other trees and grounds to prevent further spreading of the non-native plants. The work
parties will begin on Friday, Apri15 and continue through the year. Meet at 10:00 a.m. in the
covered picnic shelter in Hendricks Park.
When the ivy climbs upright, it reaches an adult stage and produces seeds. Growing by
rooting runners along the ground also smothers low growing plants, but the ivy will not produce
seeds as long as it remains horizontal. Hendricks Park Head Gardener Michael Robert says, "It's
a choice between stopping a slow moving train or a high speed engine, and the slow moving train
is easier to catch."
Bring your friends and join the "no ivy league." The pazk is accessible by caz, bicycle or
bus. Follow Walnut Street to Fairmount Boulevard, then east on Summit Avenue. Or take the
j #27 Fairmount bus to the Summit Avenue stop and walk up the pathway along Summit.
