Page 2
May 31, 1995
i
i
The Nature Conservancy of Oregon offers resource inventory and management kills,
including more than 10 years experience in managing approximately 100 acres of habi tat its
Willow Creek preserve adjacent to the Hyundai site. As a neighbor of the new Indust al facility,
the Conservancy provides the partnership with practical experience in the best methods to protect
and mitigate loss of valuable wetland in the west Eugene area.
I
The City of Eugene provides extensive expertise in land-use planning, mainten ce of ~
drainage and water quality systems, engineering, technical analysis, and project manage ent to aid
in the coordination and implementation of the West Eugene Wetlands Plan. A major i novation
of the plan is the creation of a wetland mitigation bank. The bank establishes a "credit' program
in which wetlands in one area are enhanced, restored, or created to compensate for the oss of
wetlands in other areas due to development. In 1993, the west Eugene wetland mitigat on bank
was initiated with a restoration project on a 16-acre west Eugene wetland site. The si is located
between West Fifth and West Seventh avenues east of Bailey Hill Road. Every type o wetland
found in west Eugene is present on the publicly owned site, which also serves as the a tern
gateway to the west Eugene wetland system.
As a member of the partnership, the Bureau of Land Management has acquired etland
areas designated for protection and restoration. Since 1992, the BLM has received alm st $4.5
million from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund and has acquired approxi ately 555
acres in the West Eugene Wetland area. A recent acquisition highlight is the complete public
ownership of a contiguous 200-acre wetland corridor within the Eugene city limits that ncludes
Stewart Pond and the Bertelsen Slough area. BLM also brings to the partnership many years of
resource management skills.

News Release WETLAND PARTNERSHIP i
_ j
