In
the past, cycl sts and pedestrians using the path had to negotiate a sharp turn and join with traffic
in the parkin lot for a block and a half between the end of the path and 19th Avenue. The new
design separa s bicyclists and pedestrians from parking lot traffic while actually increasing the
school's par g capacity.
"It w an easy choice to move some parking spaces in order to provide a better and safer
space for the path users, " George said
The ity repaired the path surfacing, added curbs, and provided access ramps to the
street. The hool redesigned the parking lot, adding several parking spaces in the process.
f
Dian Bishop, the city's bicycle coordinator, said the school district's offer has greatly
increased th path's safety and efficiency. "With approximately 600 bicyclists and possibly that

~ many pedes ians using the path each day, such a simple improvement will make a great
difference," he said.
