Public Works <br /> Administration <br /> City of Eugene <br /> 858 Pearl Street <br /> SEPTEMBE 7, 1995 Eugene, OR 97401 <br /> (503) 687-5262 <br /> CONTACT: Chuck Solin, Project Manager, 687-5061 <br /> From Public nformation Section, 687-5523 <br /> FOR IMME IATE RELEASE <br /> INITIAL TE CONTROL WORK BEGINS AT OLD TUGMAN PARK LANDFILL <br /> Publi access to the upper end of Tugman Park will be closed today as work begins <br /> on a project o cover exposed debris at the old Hilyard landfill in Tugman Park. <br /> Dan lsup Construction of Eugene has been awarded a $250,000 contract to reroute a <br /> portion of T gman Creek and cover the north face of the old dump site where some debris <br /> has been exp sed by erosion. The construction work will correct problems that resulted from <br /> the use of th site as a open burning dump site from the mid-1920s to the early 1950s. <br /> The rst step of the project will be to erect temporary fencing to close off all public <br /> access to the undeveloped south end of the park. The bicycle path will be closed from the <br /> bridge at the south end of the playground area to East 39th Avenue and will remain closed <br /> until the pro ect is completed. The area of exposed debris has been fenced off since August <br /> 1991, when esting by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) revealed <br /> higher than ormal levels of lead and other heavy metals at the old landfill. <br /> The roject calls for a temporary road to be constructed so the contractor can haul in <br /> <br /> nearly 13,0 cubic yards of clean material to cover the exposed debris.
