<br /> i~, GRANT H LPS PUBLIC WORKS HIRE AT-RISK YOUTH TO <br /> COMPLE E NEEDED PROJECTS <br /> The Oregon Youth Conservation Corp a division of the Oregon State Commission on <br /> Children an Families recently funded a $55,000 grant to Looking Glass to complete a <br /> number of rojects that focus on enhancing community natural resource areas. The Public <br /> ~I Works Dep ment was one of four agencies collaborating with Looking Glass on the grant <br /> application. Other participants included: the Southern Willamette Private Industry Council, <br /> it Food for L e County, and Home Depot. The grant was funded through amusement device <br /> taxes and estate general fund. <br /> Under the c nditions of the grant, the department will hire approximately 25 youth from <br /> Looking Gl s' Lane-Metro Youth Corps (LMYC) to work on targeted Public Works projects. <br /> The work 'll help the youth participants continue their education and improve their <br /> employabili , as they work on projects of value to the community. LMYC members are <br /> ~ young men and women between the ages of 16 and 24 who have dropped out of school <br /> and/or are isadvantaged and at-risk youth. <br /> Under the uidelines of the grant, the $55,000 will be used to pay a crew supervisor and <br /> ~ wages for a youth crews. Public Works will identify trail and wetland projects and will <br /> provide all he necessary materials, tools, and equipment. In addition, City project managers <br /> and staff 'll offer ongoing technical assistance to the crew supervisor and crew members and <br /> will assist 'th on-site instruction and education. <br /> Identified P blic Works projects include constructing a wheelchair accessible trail in Spencer <br /> Butte Park ear the new ropes course; installing signs along channels and creeks; assessing <br /> and invento ing native species in Hendricks Park; pruning vegetation on Ridgeline and <br /> Spencer Bu a trails; and restoring and enhancing wildlife habitat and removing non-natural <br /> ~ vegetation i wetland areas.
