LOOKING LASS YOUTH CORP PROJECT -Amazon Channel Blackberry Removal
In coopera on with Looking Glass Youth & Family Services, Maintenance Division staff
have identi ed and scheduled a number of conservation and environmentally oriented work
projects to rovide educational opportunities for participants in their Metro Youth Corps
program. ne of these projects is a stream enhancement effort aimed at removing
blackberries crowding out the native vegetation along Amazon Creek between Snell and
Martin Stre ts. In 1993, the Friends of the Amazon Committee conducted several volunteer
i I work partie to remove these blackberries, but were not able to complete the task. This
' current proj ct, expected to take approximately 4 working days, was originally scheduled to
begin Marc 13th. However, after consulting with local environmental groups, this project
has been re cheduled to begin February 27th in order to minimize possible impacts to nesting
birds. City crews will assist the Youth Corps by removing the cut and piled blackberries. As
a follow up to the blackberry removal, staff will coordinate with Friends of the Amazon
Committee o replant this section of the creek with native vegetation during the coming Fall.
For inform tion about this project, please call Jack Long at 341-5803 or Tim Rhay at 687-
5349.
'I
ii

'I
