/ III
OCTOBER 7, 1995
_ Public Works
CONTACT John Etter, Parks Planner, 687-5325 ~ Administration
Doug Card, Lane Applegate Trail Committee, 344-3538 = City of Eugene
i 858 Pearl Street
~ Eugene, OR 97401
i, From Public nformation Section, 687-5523 (503) 687-5262
FOR Il1Z IATE RELEASE
PROPOS TO MOVE SKINNER'S CABIN ANNOUNCED SATURDAY AT CELEBRATION
I, Apr posal to move the replica of Eugene Skinner's cabin to a more visible location will be
announced at a historical celebration Saturday morning. The celebration will be held at 10 a.m. at the
corner of Sec nd Avenue and Lawrence Street, the site of a plaque marking what may be the original
location of th town founder's cabin. Speakers will include members of the Applegate Trail Committee,
elected offici Is, local historians, and others with an interest in celebrating the 150th anniversary of the
trail that led ttlers to the southern Willamette valley.
Euge e Skinner's cabin on the west toe of Skinner Butte was a significant point for early

' travelers on t e Applegate trail. The Applegate Trail Committee, a statewide citizen organization, has
secured fundi g to commemorate the trail's sesquicentennial (150th) anniversary. A portion of the
Iii funding is av ilable to move the replica of Skinner's cabin currently located on the north side of the butte
~I
to a point no of the intersection of Cheshire and Lincoln streets, much closer to the original site.
Saturday's an ouncement is particularly timely because historical research indicates Eugene Skinner
moved into th cabin on October 28, 1846.
The r located cabin will be more visible and will be illuminated by street and park lighting,
making vanda ism less likely. The new site is also wheelchair assessable, and parking and park
ICI amenities are uch closer than at the current site. Additionally, the move will allow for replacement of
some of the c in's lower logs that are succumbing to ants and dry rot.
The C ty's Public Works Parks Planning staff has invited Whiteaker area neighbors to participate
in the design ocess. The actual move is expected to occur next summer.
