NEWS RELEASE <br /> Eugene Public Safety <br /> November 5, 1995 <br /> For Further nformation, contact; <br /> Jan Power, 87-5197 <br /> <br /> ~ FOR iMME I!ATE RELEASE <br /> (CITY PUB iC WORKS MA{NTENANCE OFFICES BURN) <br /> Offic sat the City's Public Works Maintenance facility were severely damaged <br /> r 'n .The facilit located at 1820 Roosevelt Boulevard su orts <br /> by fire Sund y mo nr g y, ~ pp <br /> the city's m intenance operations, and has a number of buildings at that address. The <br /> fire occurre in the administrative offices which front Roosevelt Boulevard. <br /> At 9: 9 a.m. the City's alarm monitoring service advised 9-1-1 the alarm system <br /> was indicati g an inside "activation/motion", and police officers were dispatched. At <br /> 9:52 a.m., a itizen reported seeing flames coming from the building. Police and fire <br /> crews arrive simultaneously at 9:55, and found the main office area fully involved in <br /> ,smoke and f ames. <br /> The fi st engine companies on-scene worked to suppress the flames and heat so <br /> that addition !fire crews could get inside to fight the fire. Additional companies <br /> attacked the fire from above, using aerial hoses to assist firefighters venting the roof. <br /> Six engine c meanies and two truck companies (22 firefighters) fought the b{aze for <br /> nearly an ho r, bringing the fire under control at 10:54a.m. Additional fire resources <br /> were on-sce a to provide support to the operation, which included technicians to ' <br /> maintain the elf-contained breathing apparatus, liquids and food for firefighter re- <br /> hydration, an med(c units to ensure that no one was overcome by the stresses of fire <br /> fighting. Tw of Eugene's reserve fire crews were ca{led into service to provide fire <br /> protection fo the city during the fire. <br /> Fire in estigators at the scene rredit lire doors with slowing down the path of the <br /> fire. "Too oft n", says District Chief Randy Groves, "workers tend to prop fire doors <br /> open during ork hours and then fail to close them when leaving the work site. In this <br /> case, the fire doors were closed, and this helped reduce fire spread." <br /> Police arson detectives were sifting through the rubble most of Sunday afternoon <br /> trying to Bete mine where the fire started and what caused it. <br /> Public orks and other City administrators were also on-site assessing the <br /> damage and tanning how to continue to provide services on Monday morning. City <br /> officials esti ate fire loss to the building and contents could exceed $1.5 MiNion.
